Job Offer: Senior Simulator & Modelling Engineer – Formula E
Location: Versailles Satory, France
Contract Type: Full time
Experience Required: Minimum 5 years in motorsport with strong Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) operation experience
Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Simulator & Modelling Engineer to join our Formula E team in Versailles-Satory.
In this role, you will act as the technical reference for the Driver-in-the-Loop simulator, coordinating the work of the DIL simulation group and providing advanced support across to engineers on simulator hardware environment, software, and modelling topics.
You will be responsible for the development, implementation, and correlation of high-fidelity models with a strong focus on vehicle dynamics, the integration of advanced real-time features, and for ensuring the reliability and continuous improvement of our simulator.
You will also lead correlation activities, including the definition and execution of dedicated test campaigns on track or rig, to improve simulator fidelity.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead and support the DiL simulation team, acting as the reference point for technical problem-solving and integration.
- Develop, maintain, and implement detailed vehicle subsystem models (tyres, suspension, powertrain, brakes, steering, aero) with strong expertise in MF-Tyre models and preferably thermo-mechanical tyre models.
- Integrate models within the simulation architecture for offline optimisation, DiL sessions, HIL and SIL applications.
- Design and follow correlation campaigns, including track and rig tests, with occasional travel to oversee testing and data collection.
- Analyse telemetry and test data to continuously refine simulator vehicle model fidelity and tyre behaviour representation.
- Manage and optimise DiL motion cueing strategies to ensure realistic driver feedback.
- Maintain and improve rFpro-based tracks, session setups, and other simulation environments (VI-Grade, IPG CarMaker, etc.).
- Monitor simulator hardware and software reliability, ensuring robust operation of sensors, actuators, wiring looms, motion platform, and real-time systems.
- Follow and validate simulator software updates, guaranteeing smooth integration into the workflow.
- Conduct technology scouting on simulation methods, tyre models, and real-time applications to propose strategic improvements.
- Provide technical reports, recommendations, and mentoring within the simulation group.
Profile
- Master’s or PhD in Motorsport, Mechanical, Automotive, or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in high-level motorsport (Formula E, F1, WEC, or similar), with solid experience operating and developing Driver-in-the-Loop simulators.
- Strong expertise in vehicle dynamics, with proven track record in simulation and modelling.
- Advanced knowledge of tyre models, including MF-Tyre; experience with thermo-mechanical tyre models is a strong plus.
- High-level skills in MATLAB/Simulink, plus experience with DiL platforms (rFpro, VI-Grade, IPG CarMaker).
- Strong background in real-time simulation (HIL/SIL integration).
- Familiarity with CAN communication, APIs, and system integration.
- Ideally experience in Dynamic DIL with motion cueing design and tuning.
- Strong data analytical skills, with the ability to design and follow correlation test campaigns.
- Leadership, mentoring capability, and collaborative mindset.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Nice to have: knowledge of motorsport electronics, exposure to optimisation algorithms, trackside experience, and knowledge integrating tyre test data into simulation workflows.
