No.1 Race Technician / Mechanic — Team RJN

Team RJN is seeking an experienced No.1 Race Technician to join our McLaren GT3 programme, working in both the workshop and at race and test events.

Established in 1999, Team RJN has a long history in international motorsport and driver development. As a McLaren Customer Racing team, we are looking for someone who takes pride in preparing a reliable, well-presented race car and can lead a team of technicians with confidence.

The role

You will take responsibility for the mechanical preparation, build and maintenance of your assigned car. Working closely with the Race Engineer  and crew chief, you will organise the work required, guide the technicians supporting you and ensure the car is prepared accurately and on time.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead car preparation, rebuilds and servicing between events, planning work against the agreed schedule.
  • Allocate tasks to the No.2 and supporting technicians, checking completion and maintaining consistent workmanship.
  • Carry out and verify car setup, including geometry, ride heights and corner weights, to the Race Engineer’s instructions.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and coordinate repairs, communicating faults and progress clearly.
  • Maintain accurate build records and service schedules.
  • Oversee pre-session checks and post-session inspections, escalating concerns before the car runs.
  • Participate in pit-stop practice and race pit stops, carrying out your assigned role safely and consistently.
  • Coordinate the preparation of spares, tools and pit equipment, and assist with loading, garage setup and pack-down.

Experience and skills

  • Proven experience as a No.1 mechanic, or substantial responsibility for a race car in a comparable role.
  • A strong background in GT3, GT4, prototypes or another relevant category, with both workshop and trackside experience.
  • Confidence using setup equipment, technical documentation and precision measuring tools.
  • Experience leading a small mechanical crew and working effectively with engineers.
  • A methodical approach to fault-finding, strong organisation and close attention to detail.
  • Clear communication and the ability to maintain standards when time is limited.

Desirable

  • Previous Experience with the McLaren 720S GT3 / GT3 Evo.
  • Endurance racing and pit-stop experience.
  • A relevant motorsport or automotive qualification, or equivalent practical experience.

Working arrangements

The role involves workshop preparation, regular travel, weekend work and time away during races and tests. Applicants should hold a full driving licence valid in the UK and be able to travel internationally. The role is open to both contractors and permanent applicants.
