Motorsport Wiring & Electronics Technician

Position Overview

Projx Racing is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on Motorsport Wiring & Electronics Technician with proven experience in professional motorsport harness construction, vehicle electronics, ECU integration and electrical diagnostics.

This is not a standard automotive electrician position. The successful candidate must have practical experience producing reliable, serviceable and professional motorsport wiring systems for performance and race vehicles.

The technician will be responsible for managing each wiring project from the initial vehicle assessment and material estimate through harness construction, installation, testing, commissioning and final delivery.

Working Hours

Regular working hours are:

7:00 AM to 12:00 PM
1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

The candidate must be flexible when required for dyno testing, urgent project completion, vehicle commissioning and race-day support. Race events may require work outside regular workshop hours.

Working Conditions

The technician will be provided with:

  • A dedicated, organised and properly equipped work area for motorsport harness construction
  • Suitable harness-building tools, testing equipment and workshop resources
  • A helper to assist with preparation, vehicle access, material handling and general support
  • Access to the workshop, in-house dyno and race vehicles
  • Access to approved company vendors and suppliers for purchasing wiring materials and components

The position will involve a combination of:

  • Dedicated bench-based harness construction
  • Hands-on vehicle installation
  • Workshop diagnostics and repairs
  • Dyno testing and commissioning
  • On-site diagnostics and technical work
  • Race-track support during official race days

Main Responsibilities
Harness Construction and Installation

  • Design, build, modify and repair professional motorsport-grade engine and chassis harnesses
  • Produce clean, reliable, lightweight and serviceable wiring systems
  • Correctly select wire types, wire gauges, connectors, terminals, heat shrink, boots, sleeving and circuit protection
  • Perform professional crimping, soldering, splicing, sealing, routing and strain relief
  • Create harness layouts based on the vehicle, engine, ECU, sensors and intended application
  • Integrate MoTeC ECUs, PDMs, displays, keypads, data loggers and related electronic systems
  • Integrate standalone motorsport electronics while maintaining required factory ECU and vehicle functions
  • Support dual-ECU installations involving factory control modules and standalone ECUs
  • Ensure proper grounding, shielding, power distribution and electrical protection

Assessment, Costing and Planning

  • Carefully assess each vehicle and project before work begins
  • Identify the complete scope of work and any technical risks
  • Prepare a precise list of all parts, materials and consumables required
  • Calculate the estimated cost of materials and components
  • Estimate the labour time required to complete the project
  • Provide clear and accurate information so that the company can prepare customer quotations
  • Avoid unnecessary purchases, material waste and repeated orders
  • Inform management immediately if the project scope or cost changes during the work

The candidate must understand that accurate assessment and costing are an important part of the role. Wiring projects must not begin without a clear material list, estimated cost and planned completion date.

Parts Selection and Purchasing

  • Identify the correct motorsport-grade parts required for each application
  • Understand connector families, terminal types, sensors, relays, PDM outputs, circuit protection and motorsport wiring supplies
  • Know where to source the correct parts and materials
  • Search for technical information, specifications, pinouts and manufacturer documentation online
  • Place orders through the company’s approved vendors and supplier accounts
  • Confirm part numbers, quantities, specifications and compatibility before placing an order
  • Compare available supplier options when necessary
  • Follow up on backorders, delivery times and unavailable items
  • Maintain a basic minimum stock of frequently used wiring supplies and consumables
  • Inform management in advance when stock is running low

The candidate must be comfortable working online, communicating with suppliers and independently placing accurate orders using the company’s approved vendor accounts.

Diagnostics and Technical Support

  • Diagnose electrical, sensor, ECU, CAN-bus and communication faults
  • Read and understand wiring diagrams, ECU pinouts and technical documents
  • Test circuits for continuity, resistance, voltage drop, shorts and grounding faults
  • Diagnose intermittent wiring and communication problems
  • Troubleshoot CAN-bus networks and communication between factory and aftermarket control modules
  • Perform diagnostics inside the workshop, on the dyno and at the race track
  • Support vehicle startup, commissioning, dyno testing and race-day operation
  • Carry out emergency wiring repairs and fault finding during race events when required

Documentation and Quality Control

  • Produce accurate wiring diagrams, pinout records and connector documentation
  • Label harnesses, connectors, fuses, relays and circuits correctly
  • Maintain records of materials used and work completed
  • Test every circuit before vehicle startup and final delivery
  • Ensure all wiring is protected from heat, vibration, fluids, abrasion and movement
  • Ensure the completed installation is neat, professional and easy to service
  • Minimise rework by completing every task correctly the first time
  • Keep the dedicated harness-building area clean, organised and properly stocked

Delivery and Time Management

Precise and on-time delivery is an essential requirement of this position.

The successful candidate must:

  • Agree on a realistic completion date before starting each project
  • Plan materials and orders early enough to avoid unnecessary delays
  • Complete projects according to the agreed schedule
  • Immediately communicate any issue that may affect cost or delivery time
  • Prioritise urgent workshop, dyno and race-related work when instructed
  • Avoid leaving projects incomplete due to poor planning or missing supplies
  • Take full responsibility for the quality and timely completion of assigned wiring work

Required Experience and Skills

  • Proven hands-on experience in motorsport or high-performance vehicle wiring
  • Demonstrable experience constructing complete engine or chassis harnesses
  • Experience with standalone ECUs, PDMs, displays and data systems
  • Experience with MoTeC systems is strongly preferred
  • Understanding of factory ECU integration and CAN-bus communication
  • Ability to read technical diagrams, pinouts and manufacturer documentation
  • Strong electrical diagnostic and fault-finding ability
  • Knowledge of professional motorsport connectors, terminals, tooling and materials
  • Ability to accurately assess project costs and material requirements
  • Ability to independently research, select and order the correct parts
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to professional workmanship
  • Good time management and the ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with tuners, mechanics, fabricators and management

Applicants must have genuine hands-on experience. Theoretical knowledge without practical harness-building and vehicle diagnostic experience will not be sufficient.

Benefits include:

  • Company-provided transportation
  • Work-visa sponsorship
