General Summary

This role reports to the Head of Electronics or their designee and is based in Banbury, UK. The Manager/Team Leader delivers departmental objectives by overseeing day-to-day operations, leading and developing team members, and ensuring high-quality, efficient service delivery. The role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, performance monitoring, continuous improvement, implementation of policies and procedures, and regular communication with senior leadership, while fostering a culture of accountability, inclusivity, and development.

Key Responsibilities

Role specific responsibilities

  • Act as senior technical lead for the design and development of on-car and off-car electronics architectures, ensuring performance, reliability, mass efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead the definition, design, and validation of electronics systems including ECU integration, power distribution, sensors, actuators, driver interfaces, and safety-critical systems.
  • Support design review and sign-off processes for electronics layouts, schematics, wiring architectures, and system interfaces prior to manufacture and on-car installation.
  • Drive electronics design solutions that balance performance, reliability, packaging, weight, serviceability, and cost within Formula One constraints.
  • Work closely with Chassis Design, design working groups and power unit suppliers to ensure electronics are fully integrated into the car concept from early design phases.
  • Oversee the design and integration of wiring looms, ensuring best practice in routing, shielding, environmental protection, and failure mitigation.
  • Support embedded software and SECU hardware related design decisions, ensuring hardware–software co-design is optimized within FIA requirements.
  • Ensure electronics designs support robust data acquisition, telemetry quality, and fault diagnostics to enable performance development and fast troubleshooting.
  • Lead design-led reliability initiatives, using simulation, failure mode analysis, and test feedback to prevent repeat faults.
  • Maintain high-quality electronics design documentation, version control, and configuration management throughout the car lifecycle.
  • Deputize for the Head of Electronics when required, providing technical authority as needed on electronics design decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership in support of the Head of Department, mentoring, and design guidance to electronics engineers, raising overall design capability within the department.
  • Help identify and manage electronics design risks, escalating issues that could impact performance, reliability, or regulatory compliance.

  • Support the implementation of departmental strategies in line with organisational goals.
  • Lead team-level initiatives and contribute to cross-functional projects that promote continuous improvement.
  • Provide input into policy and process development, sharing insights from frontline operations.

  • Oversee day-to-day team operations, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and meet performance standards.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience within motorsport electronics, ideally Formula One or a comparable high-performance environment.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership experience in complex, time-critical environments.
  • 8–10 years of experience in a similar role or motorsport environment (preferably Formula 1).
  • Proven leadership in high-pressure, performance-driven environments.

Physical Demands

Extended Hours & Flexibility

  • Many roles require working evenings, weekends, and public holidays, particularly during race season or critical development phases.

 

Travel Requirements

  • Roles supporting race operations, logistics, or communications may involve frequent international travel, including long-haul flights and time zone shifts.

 

Physical Activity (Varies by Role)

  • Trackside roles may involve standing for long periods, walking across paddocks, and working in noisy, crowded environments.
  • Factory roles may require manual handling of components, use of machinery, or working in temperature-controlled areas.
  • Office-based roles typically involve prolonged computer use and occasional movement between departments.

 

Sensory Demands

  • Exposure to high noise levels (e.g., engines, pit lane activity), bright lighting, and fast-moving environments is common in race support roles.
  • This role is based in a shared workplace environment where exposure to common allergens (including food products, fragrances and cleaning materials) may occur. While we will always consider reasonable adjustments, we are unable to guarantee a completely allergen-free environment.

 

Health & Safety Compliance

  • All roles require adherence to strict safety protocols, especially in technical and trackside environments.
