General Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Vehicle Performance, located in Banbury, UK. This position is a key liaison role between the team’s factory based Vehicle Performance group and track based Race Engineering group.  Primarily responsible for managing the team’s simulator programme and for delivery of analysis driver and vehicle performance, both in the simulator and on the track. Responsible for tracking and maintaining good correlation between the team’s simulation tools and on-track performance whilst contributing to the development of simulation models, with the goal of continuously improving the team’s understanding of the vehicle-driver system.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities:      

  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Plan and co-ordinate the team’s simulator programme, using race or simulator drivers;
  • Lead the delivery of the Vehicle Performance group’s analysis work, pre and post-event;
  • Recommend and manage simulated vehicle setups, test plans and outcomes, ensuring data quality, and providing live feedback to drivers and reporting on each simulator test;
  • Develop and implement strategies for monitoring model correlation, and managing event-specific model parameters;
  • Recommend and implement developments to improve analysis processes and accuracy;
  • Work with the Vehicle Performance group to continuously improve and ensure the fitness for purpose of the team’s fledgling vehicle modelling and simulation toolset;
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
  • Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Head of Vehicle Performance or his designee.

 

Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum BS degree in a STEM subject.  At least 5 years experience in a vehicle dynamics related role in either Formula One or other high level motorsport, including exposure to modelling and simulation work.  Experience managing a real-time simulator programme and/or trackside Performance Engineering of race drivers.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A robust technical background in applied mathematics, mechanical engineering and vehicle dynamics specifically.
  • Ability to work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations, whilst effectively prioritising and managing work load.
  • Work well in a team environment, interacting with personnel at all levels.

 

Equipment and Applications:

  • MATLAB, Dymola/Modelica, McLaren Electronic Systems toolset.  C#, C or C++ a bonus.

 

Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritise within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role requires occasional travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

This position may require lifting up to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands.  Work environment includes race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids.
