Systems Engineer – Andretti Formula E

Working with the other car engineers you will be responsible for the general powertrain and vehicle systems. Key functions include the reliability and performance of the vehicle powertrain. Responsible for the cars software mapping, systems and controls. An integral part of race team that operates the car in a professional and safe manner at all times while ensuring that Engineering requirements and requests are met promptly and accurately.

Base: Donington/Banbury; ability to work in the UK

Min 3yrs experience in a high level of motorsport required i.e. F1/Formula E/GP2/WEC/IndyCar

Degree educated in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic or Automotive Engineering

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and optimising the vehicle systems for best reliability and performance
  • Responsible for implementing the correct software mapping into the race cars and ensuring they meet all the relevant set up parameters and quality criteria.
  • Responsibility for the condition, calibration and lifeing of all car and equipment sensors ensuring they meet all the relevant set up parameters and quality criteria.
  • You will ensure that the car is built consistently to the highest standards and meets the relevant set up parameters and all the criteria of the build specification and homologation.
  • Inspection post running of all sensors and relating items, reporting of condition and damage to the Chief Engineer and Chief Mechanic.
  • Maintenance of minimum stock levels of sensors and electrical components.
  • Programming of car control unit / data logger including data off load
  • Set up and monitoring of car telemetry systems
  • Preparation of standard reports, graphs, tables etc. both trackside and at the factory
  • Reporting back all operational aspects of the car systems to the development team; highlighting any on or off-track issues and indicating solutions or potential countermeasures.
  • Manage work flow and software updates with Test and factory development teams
  • Working with Engineering Team to continually improve and upgrade software tools.
  • Support any rig and or simulator testing as required
  • Following Engineering procedures and protocols, pertaining to assembly, operation and safety.
  • Recording and feedback of parameters and incidences as they occur or as requested.
  • Assist in the set up and operation of the garage and its infrastructure.
  • Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Race Team Chief Engineer or his designee.
  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Responsibility for the cleanliness and condition of your work area, the garage, the factory and all tools and equipment.
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

  • Working knowledge of high voltage powertrain systems including motor generator units, power inverters, DCàDC convertors, propulsion batteries and safety systems.
  • An ability to read and interpret technical drawings including wiring diagrams and information pertaining to assembly, periodic updates and modifications.
  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills through both theoretical and practical knowledge. 
  • Excellent understanding of automotive software and electronics.
  • Strong understanding of current race car data acquisition systems; ideally WINTAX / ATLAS - SYSMON / WINDARAB – MODAS
  • Working knowledge of best practices as it relates to motorsport and vehicle systems
  • Vehicle CANbus, Ethernet networking, management and diagnostic knowledge is required.
  • An ability to manufacturer and or repair minor wiring looms or sensors is an advantage
  • IT literate and highly competent in the use of multiple packages and platforms.
  • The ability to consistently work to the highest professional standards with an exceptional attitude towards attention to detail.
  • Solid computer knowledge, preferred experience in Microsoft Office products and VBA.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

You will work with a team of engineers and mechanics throughout the build process, undertaking repairs and assembly in a methodical manner whilst adhering to strict homologation regulations and deadlines. An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require extensive domestic and international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
