General Summary:

This position reports to the Director of Engineering or their designee; is located in Banbury, UK. The core responsibility of the role will provide strategic support for trackside events including all FIA Formula 1 championship races and some test events.


 General Responsibilities:

  • Provides day-to-day management of strategy group within the race engineering department; directs and coaches team members to maximise the team performance, and oversees daily activities
  • Support of events, including all FIA Formula 1 Championship races, from either trackside or the Factory Race Support Room.
  • Pre-event simulations and reports, in-event support and post-race analysis.
  • Competitor Analysis both during a race weekend and between events, aiding and assisting other departments if applicable.
  • Improve existing tools and help develop the direct the strategy group.
  • Numerical and Statistical analysis of data.
  • Development of the existing tools used in strategy operations and procedures.
  • Researching and implementing new analysis, methodologies, software tools and techniques for future developments.
  • Lead Pit Stop Working Group, define projects and their priorities
  • Assisting with pitstop analysis (both competitor and team), analysing data and provide detailed feedback to the pit crew.
  • Take ownership of the Race Strategy systems, making sure they are set up and running correctly and troubleshooting any issues that may occur.
  • Assist Team Manager and Director of Engineering on Sporting Regulation related matters.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for the management of the other strategists within the engineering group.
  • Follow and contribute towards the strategy and organizational direction of the team, defining future needs of the business and recommending solutions to suit.
  • Manage the group budgets whilst coordinating with Director if Engineering on all proposed and real costs. 
  • Asist with the implementation of new policies and operating procedures, whilst ensuring the existing are followed continuously.
  • Follows, enforces, and promotes health & safety and the guidelines in all venues.
  • Assumes any responsibilities delegated by the Director of Engineering or their designee.


Education and Work Experience:

  • A Masters or PhD level degree in a STEM discipline
  • Experience in data analysis, numerical and statistical methodologies and their applications.
  • Strong problem solving, logical thinking with research and reporting skills are essential.
  • At least 4 years’ experience within a Formula 1 motorsport environment, including significant strategy experience.


Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to build productive relationships
  • Excellent planning, strategic and organizational skills
  • The ability to understand the big picture whiles overseeing minute details in a time stressed, high-pressure environment.
  • Capable of working in a team environment to a very high standard and a positive work attitude.
  • A sympathetic approach and a willingness to help other is essential.
  • Knowledge of the correct methods in department disciplines and/or practices.


Equipment and Applications:

  • Python, VBA and MATLAB programming.
  • C# programming.
  • Experience with databases, both in creation and management.
  • Other programming languages to aid in the development of live and/or interactive tools.
  • Experience in data analysis preferably using MAT ATLAS.
  • Technical experience of Formula 1 Race Strategy.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle & tyre performance.


Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role will require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.


This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast- paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.
